IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report Synthesis Released

IPCC Finalizes Comprehensive Climate Change Report

Synthesis Report Informs Global Climate Actions

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has released the Synthesis Report for its Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). The report, presented at a press conference in Interlaken, Switzerland, on March 20, 2023, provides a comprehensive assessment of the latest climate science and its implications for the world. It is the culmination of the IPCC's sixth assessment cycle, which began in 2015.

The Synthesis Report, which summarizes the findings of the three Working Group reports and the Special Report on 1.5°C, presents a stark warning about the urgency and magnitude of the climate crisis. The report highlights that global temperatures have risen by approximately 1.1°C since the pre-industrial era and are continuing to rise, leading to widespread and increasingly severe climate impacts such as extreme heat, heavy rainfall, and sea-level rise.

The report emphasizes that limiting global warming to 1.5°C, as per the Paris Agreement, requires immediate and ambitious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It stresses the importance of transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, protecting and restoring forests, and adopting sustainable land-use practices. The report also highlights the need for adaptation measures to build resilience to the impacts of climate change that are already underway.

The IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report is a critical resource for policymakers, scientists, and other stakeholders involved in addressing climate change. The report provides a clear and evidence-based assessment of the current state of the climate system, the risks and challenges posed by climate change, and the actions needed to mitigate and adapt to its impacts. It is expected to play a significant role in guiding future climate policies and actions.
